Preparing for a Cath Lab Procedure

Below is a brief overview of what to expect when preparing for your Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory procedure at Museo Ambulatory Surgery Center.

How to Prepare & What to Expect

  • Scheduling & Insurance:

Once your procedure is scheduled, a team member will contact you about your insurance and coverage.

  • Pre-Procedure Call:

A nurse will call 1–3 business days before your appointment to review instructions and answer any questions.

  • Lab Tests:

Your physician may order laboratory tests before your procedure.

  • Fasting & Medications:

If you will receive moderate sedation, do not eat or drink for 6 hours before the procedure, and follow your physician’s instructions about which medications to take.

  • Advanced Directives:

If you have an Advanced Directive or Medical Power of Attorney, bring a copy with you.

  • Transportation:

Arrange for an adult (18+) to drive you home.

  • What to Bring:
  • A list of all current medications
  • Your ID and insurance card(s)
  • Co-pay or deductible payment
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes; if you are having a pacemaker or defibrillator implanted, please wear a button-up shirt.
  • During the Procedure:

You will be monitored closely, and a nurse will be with you to ensure your comfort. Family and friends may wait in our reception area.  Your physician will speak with them afterwards.

  • After the Procedure:

You will rest in a recovery area under nurse supervision. You’ll receive a light snack and written discharge instructions. We recommend having a responsible adult stay with you for 24 hours.

  • Follow-Up:

Our nursing staff will call you the next day to check on your recovery.

Museo Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is our state-of-the-art outpatient facility where we provide a high quality, safe and convenient alternative to hospitalbased procedures. We are a private accredited facility, performing non-emergency and elective procedures.
What to Expect
Our facility is located on the first floor of the Museo building (5115 Fannin St.) designed with patient convenience in mind. Our parking garage entrance is located on San Jacinto Street. To prepare our patients for your procedure, we will collaborate with your physician and their clinical team to ensure continuity of care. Our team will reach out to you to ensure you are fully informed and prepared for your procedure. For most patients, the entire stay at our center, including surgery and recovery, is under four hours.
